How to Identify Trainable Candidates During Recruitment

Hiring only “ready-made” talent is getting expensive and, frankly, limiting. The smartest SMEs in Nigeria are doing something different. They are hiring for potential. They are looking for people they can train, shape, and grow.
So how do you actually spot a trainable candidate?
1. Focus on how they learn, not just what they know
Experience is great. But it’s not everything. What you really want is someone who can learn fast and adapt even faster.
Ask simple but revealing questions:
“Can you explain a situation where you had to learn a brand new skill in a short amount of time in order to be effective in your job?”
“How do you approach unfamiliar challenges?”
Pay attention to how they think, not just what they say. Candidates who show curiosity, clear thinking, and a willingness to try often turn into your best hires. Skills can be taught. The hunger to learn? That’s harder to fake. In fact, most HR leaders now prioritise curiosity and willingness to learn over static skills
2. Pay close attention to attitude, not Just ability
Attitude helps figure out candidates who are the most trainable. You can train skills, but you can’t easily fix attitude.
Trainable candidates usually stand out without trying too hard. They are positive. They are open. They don’t get defensive when challenged. Instead, they reflect, adjust, and keep moving.
Watch how they handle pressure during the interview. Defensive answers are red flags. Reflective answers signal growth potential. A strong attitude directly influences how well someone absorbs training and adapts to change .
3. Test for Real-World Thinking
CVs can be polished. Thinking cannot. Forget textbook questions for a minute during interviews and give them something practical by using simple, job-relevant scenarios:
Give a real business problem
Ask how they would approach it
Observe their logic, not perfection
This method reveals problem-solving ability and independent thinking, both key indicators of long-term performance and adaptability. Remember that you’re not looking for a perfect answer. You’re looking for their approach. Their logic. Their ability to think on their feet.
The Bottom Line
Hiring for perfection is a trap. Hiring for potential is a strategy. The candidates who are eager, curious, and adaptable often become your strongest assets.
